Restart: Χτίζοντας τη ζωή που θέλουμε
Οι περισσότεροι έχουν συνδέσει το άκουσμα της λέξης restart με την επανεκκίνηση στον υπολογιστή ή το κινητό, όταν για κάποιο λόγο σταματά η σωστή λειτουργία τους. Υπάρχει, όμως, μια ηλικιακή ομάδα που ακούει πολύ ένονα στο μυαλό του ή από τους γύρω της αυτή τη λέξη, αλλά για άλλο λόγο. Για την επανεκκίνηση που νιώθει ότι χρειάζεται όταν φτάνει σε σημείο να μην τον ικανοποιεί ο δρόμος που τον οδήγησαν οι επιλογές του και κάνει έναν επαναπροσδιορισμό. Πότε αποφασίζει ένας άνθρωπος ότι η ζωή που έχει χτίσει δεν είναι πια η ζωή που θέλει να συνεχίσει; Και πόσο συχνά χρειάζεται να αλλάξει όχι μόνο αυτό που κάνει, αλλά και τον τρόπο με τον οποίο αντιλαμβάνεται τον εαυτό του;
Παρακολούθησα χθες τη θεατρική παράσταση Restart, που είναι βασισμένη στο έργο L’embarras du choix των Sébastien Azzopardi και Sacha Danino. Ένας σαραντάρης που συνειδητοποιεί ότι έχει εγκαταλείψει τα όνειρα που είχε για την επαγγελματική του πορεία, δεν διεκδίκησε όσο έπρεπε την κοπέλα που ερωτεύτηκε και κατέληξε να ζει μια συμβατική ζωή, κάνοντας μια δουλειά που δεν τον γεμίζει και έχοντας στο πλάι του μια γυναίκα που δεν αγαπά αρκετά για να τον κάνει να θέλει να ονειρεύεται. Και σε όλα αυτά, ένα κοινό που καλείται να πάρει αποφάσεις για εκείνον. Να κυνηγήσει το όνειρο ή να μείνει; Να πει την αλήθεια ή το ψέμα; Και όταν έχει καταστρέψει ό,τι έχει, υπάρχει ελπίδα να σηκωθεί;
Στη χθεσινή διαδραστική παράσταση προτίμησα να παρακολουθώ τις αντιδράσεις των ατόμων γύρω μου. Με πόση άνεση αποφάσιζαν αν ο ήρωας του έργου έπρεπε να αλλάξει κάτι ή όχι, να πει ή να μην πει. Είναι ίδια η ευκολία, όταν πρόκειται για τη δική τους ζωή; Θα έπαιρναν τον ίδιο δρόμο ή σπρώχνουν τους άλλους να κάνουν όσα οι ίδιοι δεν τολμούν;
Μήπως, λοιπόν, ήρθε η στιγμή να μάθουμε κάτι κι εμείς από τις νεότερες γενιές;
Most people associate the word restart with rebooting a computer or mobile phone when, for some reason, it stops functioning properly. There is, however, an age group that hears this word echo loudly in their minds or from the people around them, but for a different reason. It is about the fresh start they feel they need when they reach a point where the path their choices have led them down no longer satisfies them, prompting them to reassess their lives. When does a person decide that the life they have built is no longer the life they want to continue living? And how often do they need to change not only what they do, but also the way they perceive themselves?
Yesterday, I attended the theatrical performance Restart, based on the play L’embarras du choix by Sébastien Azzopardi and Sacha Danino. It tells the story of a man in his forties who realizes that he has abandoned his dreams for his professional future, failed to pursue the woman he fell in love with, and ended up living a conventional life. He has a job that does not fulfill him and a woman by his side whom he does not love enough to inspire him to dream. And then there is the audience, called upon to make decisions on his behalf. Should he pursue his dream or stay where he is? Should he tell the truth or lie? And when he has destroyed everything he had, is there hope that he can pick himself up again?
During yesterday’s interactive performance, I chose to observe the reactions of the people around me. How easily they decided whether the protagonist should change something or leave things as they were, whether he should speak up or remain silent. Is it just as easy when it comes to their own lives? Would they choose the same path, or do they push others to do the things they themselves do not dare to do?
I looked for findings from the most recent research on the fresh starts we decide to make at certain points in our lives, including the ages at which we make them and the areas of life they affect. According to the Deloitte Global Gen Z and Millennial Survey 2025, in Greece, 47% of Gen Z respondents and 49% of millennials said they had left a job because it lacked purpose or did not align with their values, with financial stability and peace of mind among their priorities. Do these findings surprise those of you born before 1980? Perhaps they do. But would that be the case if family and school environments had encouraged us from an early age to consider changing the things that do not satisfy us, and not just in our professional lives?
Perhaps, then, the time has come for us to learn something from the younger generations, too.
